March 15-18: This Week in Science

This week Roanoke County schools are observing Green Week. On Friday I sent home a Carbon Footprint Calculator and asked the students to complete it with their parents. This worksheet has been sent home with every secondary student in the county with hopes that it will raise awareness of our role in the reduction of CO2 in our atmosphere. Participation is voluntary, but my students will receive extra credit for the return of a completed worksheet, and the grade level returning the most worksheets to central administration will receive ice cream! I will be completing a worksheet with my husband for our home, and I'm sure the results will be very interesting, if not shocking.

On Monday night students may also receive extra credit for attending the Not My Child parent/student meeting held in our forum at 7pm. This meeting will address the current internet and cell phone practices of students in the Glenvar area, with an emphasis on safety. I hope to see you there.

Of course, we are also having science class this week. We will complete the last astronomy notepage on modern space exploration, with a graded worksheet completed with a space travel time line. Following that we will end our week with Apollo 13, which will have to be continued into next week. The 3rd nine weeks ends on Thursday, and students will have Friday off while teachers complete report cards for distribution next week.
